SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Casa Verde Golf, a wholly owned subsidiary of OB Sports Golf Management, recently renovated bunker complexes throughout The Westin Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Having commenced work mid-June, substantial completion of construction was achieved August 30, 2019, in time for the 27-hole golf course to be re-opened and available for play on all three nines over the Labor Day holiday weekend – covering a lot of ground over the span of roughly 2.5 months.
With design direction being provided by Scott Miller, of Scott Miller Golf Design, the project’s scope included the comprehensive process of stripping turf surrounds, importing fill material, complete re-shaping of bunker floors & faces, establishing new edging throughout, installing new drainage, lining with ZLine Bunker Systems©, hauling and placement of new bunker sand then finally re-installing sod throughout the surrounds. Casa Verde Golf was tasked with completing this process for 50,000 square feet of bunker area throughout the property.
“Being a resort facility, it was imperative that we completed our work in advance of the Labor Day holiday,” said Jeff Schwinkendorf, Vice President of Casa Verde Golf. “Our crew endured occasional seven-day work weeks and 12-hour days, but we got there!”

Concurrent to the bunker renovation scope, Casa Verde Golf also completed a 4,500 square feet “Teaching Tee” at the Driving Range, as well as the removal of several bunkers from play. The “Teaching Tee” will provide a secluded spot away from the primary tee deck for Westin Kierland’s golf professionals to conduct private lessons away from other guest and resort play. The work entailed substantial clearing and earthwork prior to the actual feature construction and laser-leveling of the tee surface. The removal of several bunkers required that Casa Verde Golf haul and place material within selected current bunker cavities, re-shape and tie-in area with surrounds before finishing off with sod. The removal of these few bunkers will allow the club to increase efficiencies in maintenance while not impacting the strategy or playability of the golf hole.
“As playability and aesthetics of our bunkers are among the key features of The Westin Kierland Golf Club, it was imperative that this project be executed at a very high level,” said Dan Figueras, Director of Agronomy. “We are pleased to unveil a new look while further demonstrating our continued commitment to meet the evolving needs of those playing our Scottsdale course.”
The Westin Kierland Golf Club, situated at the heart of The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, is located in North Scottsdale, adjacent to Kierland Commons. Uniquely, the resort pays particular attention to its Scottish heritage in Scottsdale by honoring the culture with Scottish Pipes at Sunset, where guests are invited to gather around the fire pit to enjoy the sounds of the bagpipes, and a Scottish Golf experience that includes kilt rentals.
“Working with Director of Golf Nancy Dickens and Course Superintendent Dan Figueras, this was a collaborative effort,” said Schwinkendorf. “We were able to collectively trouble-shoot our way through many obstacles. As a result, the product we were able to achieve in the field will be enjoyed by golfers for many years to come.”
