PAPAGO GOLF CLUB WINS 2019 OB SPORTS NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

December 12th, 2019

Local knowledge comes in handy as hosts claim nine-shot win over Tijeras Creek Golf Club

PHOENIX – An eight-man team from Papago Golf Club made the most of its course knowledge, besting a field of 16 teams from across the country to win the 2019 OB Sports National Team Championship. Played December 7-8 at the standout City of Phoenix municipal track, Papago finished with a total score of -40, good for a comfortable nine-shot cushion over second-place Tijeras Creek Golf Club of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

“What a special weekend it was to not only host so many members of the OB Sports family of courses, but also to come away with the prestigious Team Championship title,” said Daryl Crawford, General Manager of Papago Golf Club. “It’s great to show off one of the most historic public golf courses in Arizona, and it will be even better to show off that trophy in our golf shop for the next year!”

“The event was outstanding – from the welcome reception that featured live music and the TravisMathew Shopping experience to the amazing service the Papago team delivered and the support of our sponsoring partners, this tournament is a blast,” said Matt Molloy, Senior Vice President of Operations for OB Sports. “Congratulations to the team at Papago Golf Club – not only for putting on a first-class event but for winning the Championship. The golf course was in great shape, the food was amazing, and the camaraderie never disappoints.”

The OB Sports National Team Championship consisted of eight-player teams made up of four two-player teams, playing in one scratch flight and three amateur flights. Handicaps were used to determine net scoring, with the three lowest net team scores determining the overall team score. Rounding out the top five teams on the leaderboard were Mt. Graham Golf Club from Thatcher, Ariz.; Palm Valley Golf Club from Goodyear, Ariz.; and High Meadow Ranch Golf Club from Magnolia, Tex.

Daily prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and lowest scores per flight were awarded each day, as well as a separate pool for net skins and gross skins.

About Papago Golf Club
Designed by William Francis "Billy" Bell, Papago Golf Course opened in 1963 as a crown jewel of the City of Phoenix’s municipal portfolio. It hosted the 1971 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, and incubated some of Arizona’s most recognizable talent. In 2008, the par-72, 7,333-yard layout underwent a renovation to restore and enhance Bell’s original work in time to host the 2009 J Golf Phoenix LPGA International. And recently, through a public/private partnership between the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University and the Arizona Golf Community Foundation, the club opened the state-of-the-art Lou Grubb Clubhouse, Lou’s Bar and Grill and Evie’s Pavilion, along with upgraded public practice facilities and a private practice facility for ASU Golf teams. Papago sits on the borders of Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale, surrounded by the Papago Buttes less than two miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
