DANA POINT, Calif. – Monarch Beach Resort has won the prestigious Gold Medal Resort Award from GOLF Magazine, joining elite company from throughout North America as one of only four Southern California destinations on the Gold Medal list of honorees for 2016-2017.

Part of the magazine’s “Premier Resorts” package, both in the June 2016 print edition and on, the biannual rankings are based on four criteria: golf, lodging, food and drink and service. Forty percent of the resort recognition is linked to golf, where voters considered factors such as challenge, playability, scenery, history, facilities and service. The rest of the score was equally weighed among lodging, food and drink and overall service at the resorts.

“We are honored and proud to be ranked by GOLF Magazine as a premier golf resort,” said Chris White, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing of Monarch Beach Resort. “The Gold Medal award, along with recently completed renovations to the guest rooms and public spaces, take Monarch Beach Resort to another level.”

One of only six California resorts on the Gold Medal Resorts honor roll, Monarch Beach Resort is home to a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed golf course that wraps along the dramatic bluffs above the Pacific. The 6,600-yard, par-70 Monarch Beach Golf Links, recent host of the PGA Southern California Open Championship, is a modern design inspired by the legendary seaside Scottish links. Amid sweeping views to the sea, the well-crafted routing of tight fairways and rolling greens provides challenges as well as enjoyment to golfers of all levels.

“This is a special honor for our golf property,” said Eric Lohman, PGA General Manager of Monarch Beach Golf Links, “and It is a testament to the dedication of our entire golf operations team.”

Off the golf course, the newly enhanced Monarch Beach Resort, an elegant coastline escape, has been transformed following a recent 400-room refresh, along with a redesigned lobby, five new dining concepts, an expansive pool area and pool bar, renovated public spaces and a new, exclusive spa partnership with Miraval, a global leader of spa and wellness.

Expressions of the resort’s new personality – equal parts sophisticated, approachable and intimate – celebrate Dana Point’s playful coastal lifestyle and immerse guests in the laid-back luxury of beachfront living. Recently restyled guest rooms and suites reflect a coastal palette of cool blues, greens and crisp whites. Each features private balconies from which to take in the ocean breeze, plush bedding for restful nights, and spacious living areas to find reprieve at the day’s end.

“The extensive renovations refine the property’s casual coastal character and enhance the guest experience at every touch point,” White said.  “The transformation of the resort has surpassed our expectations.”

Secluded down the hillside from the golf course is the resort’s private Monarch Beach, a pristine sandy playground along the cool blue ocean that is the ideal setting for all the classic California beach games and water sports. Views of Orange County's finest Salt Creek Surf Break, Catalina Island and the Pacific Ocean will soothe any soul.

Monarch Beach Resort also is honored as a Forbes Five-Star, and AAA Five-Diamond property.

In recognizing the 100 greatest golf destinations in North America, GOLF magazine lists only properties that excel in course design and playability, while providing luxurious accommodations. Scores produce winners in three separate levels – Platinum, Gold and Silver. GOLF has been ranking resorts around the world for 28 years.
