RESULTS OF 2012 NEVADA STATE JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
HOSTED BY ANGEL PARK GOLF CLUB
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The 2012 Nevada State Junior Golf Championship was recently held at Angel Park Golf Club on June 25-26. At the conclusion of the two-day, 36-hole tournament played on Angel Park’s par-71 Mountain Course, Las-Vegas-area juniors took top honors in three of the four categories. In the Boy’s 15-17 year-old division, Bradley Keyer of Henderson carded a +4 (146) to win. In the Boy’s 13-14 year-old division, Grant McKay of Henderson fired a +9 (151) to edge out Las Vegas’ Brandon Smith in a playoff.
In the Girl’s 15-17 year-old division, Anne Freman of Las Vegas bested the field by five strokes, shooting a +4 (146). And in the Girl’s 13-14 year-old division, Alice Duan of Reno ran away from the field with a dominant 11-stroke victory, finishing with a +6 (148). Scores for the entire filed listed below.
The field was made up of 64 junior golfers (40 boys and 24 girls) ranging in age from 13-17, with half of the field residing in the Las Vegas area and the other half from northern Nevada. They all qualified for the Nevada State Junior Championship during an event held at Palm Valley Golf Club on May 19. The Boy’s 15-17 played Angel Park’s Mountain course from 6,722 yards and the Boy’s 13-14 age group played from 6,223 yards. The Girl’s 15-17 played the Mountain course from 5,718 yards and the 13-14 age group from 5,150.
“Junior golf has always been a high priority for Angel Park and OB Sports [Angel Park’s management firm],” said Greg Brockelman, director of golf at Angel Park Golf Club. “The nature of the game encourages the kind of values and behaviors that foster success on and off the golf course. Alongside likeminded groups such as the First Tee of Southern Nevada, we feel a responsibility to help break down some of the barriers that junior golfers face by providing junior-friendly facilities and programs so that they get off to a great start in a game that will be with them for a lifetime.”
Angel Park’s junior-friendly facilities include a spacious practice tee that is lighted from evening enjoyment. There is a natural grass putting course to add a bit of excitement to practicing the short game. The Cloud Nine Short Course allows juniors to play a manageable golf course affordably, and it is also lighted. And after the juniors have fulfilled some of the requisite skills; they may graduate to teeing it up on the two 18-hole golf courses at Angel Park alongside their parents.
In addition to junior-friendly facilities, Angel Park hosts a number of events and programs that allow juniors to practice and compete. It’s a home to a chapter of the First Tee of Southern Nevada with programming two days a week in spring/fall and one day per week summer/winter. It hosts the Antiqua Junior Tour event in and an American Junior Golf Association event. Angel Park serves as the home course for Clark High School as well as opening its practice facilities to Meadows School, Faith Lutheran and Palo Verde H.S. The club hosts the College Golf Combines in December and the TaylorMade World Master’s of Junior Golf in July.
