POSITION:  HORTICULTURIST - HERITAGE EAGLE BEND GOLF CLUB

Overview

The Horticulturist, under the supervision of the Superintendent and Grounds Superintendent is responsible for, but not limited to, design, installation, and maintenance of ornamental landscaping throughout the golf course, clubhouse, community, and privately owned homes.

Functions
  • Designs flower beds and cultivates shrubs and flowers.
  • Trims and prunes trees, perennials, hedges and shrubbery.
  • Designs, installs and maintains low-pressure irrigation systems for landscaping.
  • Instructs and trains groundskeepers in routine maintenance of ornamental plantings.
  • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline.
  • Alerts the Grounds Superintendent to pest concerns.
  • Applies pesticides and fertilizers to ornamental plantings.
  • Advises the Grounds Superintendent of the need for tree and perennial trimming services.
  • Answers and advises homeowners’ questions and concerns with their landscape.
  • Maintains the common turf grass areas with in the community.
  • Responsible for snow removal program on the community streets, sidewalks and driveways of contracted homes.
  • Opens the maintenance shop and runs operations in the absence of the Superintendent and Grounds Superintendent
 Employment Standards and Work Environment
  • Associate degree or extensive experience in horticulture or a closely related field.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics, growth habits and proper cultivation of a wide selection of flowering bulbs, annuals, biennials and perennial plant materials, including both herbaceous and woody plants.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers, soil conditioners and pest control methods and materials.
  • May require state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator. 
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Presents a professional image at all times.
  • Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Experience in golf course maintenance and the game of golf a plus.
