City of Safford approves agreement at City Council meeting

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — OB Sports Golf Management is proud to announce it has recently assumed club management duties for Mt. Graham Municipal Golf Course in Thatcher, AZ.  Effective May 10, 2016, OB Sports began overseeing all golf and club operations for the facility, which features “Mt. Graham 1,” a 6,354-yard, par-72 championship layout.

“We’re appreciative of the opportunity to help restore Mt. Graham Golf Course to the level the residents of the community will be proud,” said Phil Green, COO of OB Sports.  “From a personal perspective I was born and raised in Safford and this golf course introduced me to the great game of golf, which has led to an exciting career in the golf industry. I am extremely excited to work on this project with the rest of the OB team.”

“The Mt. Graham Golf Course is a great amenity in the community with a lot of potential, and we are very optimistic in the current direction that the Golf Course is heading,” said City of Safford Planning and Community Development Director Dustin Welker. “In the last few months OB Sports has worked with city staff providing guidance on maintenance and operations at the course.  We have been very satisfied and impressed with their work and progress.”

Opened in 1956, Mt. Graham Golf Course plays a central role in the surrounding community. It is home to the Safford and Thatcher High Schools, and the Eastern Arizona College golf teams.  It also plays host to active women's and men's golf associations, as well as several invitational tournaments each year; and previously hosted an annual Southwest Sectional PGA pro-am. Each year the golf course draws winter visitors from around the country and affords residents very attractive recreational opportunities year round.

The practice facility at Mt. Graham Golf Course features a natural grass range, as well as multiple short game areas. The walking-friendly layout utilizes two sets of tee boxes, measuring 5,691 yards at par-73 from the Ladies’ tees. Water comes into play on 10 holes, and strategically placed sand bunkers will provide a challenge for the average golfer.

OB Sports looks forward to enhancing the overall golfing experience in the Gila Valley, from the course itself to the golf shop and restaurant, and cementing Mt. Graham Golf Course’s role as a valuable amenity in the Gila Valley community.

“OB Sports is a very established and experienced company,” said Welker, “and we are confident that they will help us raise the quality of play and overall experience at the golf course.”
